Gate: A doorway in a fence.

Grain: The results of harvested crops.

Grain Bin: Metal cylinders where grains are stored.

Grain Drill: A farm implement for planting oats and hay.

james glossary Grain Pup: A grain wagon made from an old grain truck. We took the cab and engine off and built a hitch on the front end. It can be pulled by another grain truck or by a tractor.

james glossaryGrain Truck: A heavy duty truck that hauls grain or other dry materials. Our grain truck has a cargo door on the back end. It also has a roll-top tarp so it won't rain or snow on the grain inside of the box.

james glossary Grain Vacuum: Machine powered by a tractor that vacuums grain and unloads it into a wagon or truck.

Grain Wagon: Used for carrying grain from the field to the farm.

Grove: A group of trees. If the grove is around the farm it is called a windbreak.

Harrow: A farm implement that prepares the soil for growing crops.

james glossaryHay: The product of harvested forages.

Hay Baler: A farm implement for harvesting hay or straw.

Hay Bine: A farm implement for cutting hay.

Hay Rack: A farm implement for hauling hay or straw.

Hay Rake: A farm implement for preparing hay or straw to be baled.

Pig: A farm animal. We raise about 1000 pigs a year and sell them at market time.

james glossaryHog Cart: A wagon to move hogs or sows around with. We use this piece of machinery all the time.

james glossaryHoop Building: A fabric covered arch building. The building has a lime or cement floor. You can use it for multi-purposes. It can be used for storage; a shop; hog, calves, sheep, or other farm livestock housing; grain storage; and more. It is a very nice structure. You may need to replace the fabric cover every 15 years. It is warm inside in the winter and cool inside in the summer. We have 4 of these buildings. Three of them are used for hogs and sows. They get bedded up with large rectangular bales of straw. The fourth one is used for straw and hay storage.

John Deere tractor: A kind of tractor.

james glossaryJohn Deere 3020: A tractor built in 1967 in Waterloo, Iowa.

james glossaryJohn Deere 4020: A farm tractor built in 1970. This was built in Waterloo, Iowa, too. We have two of these and recently sold the one with the loader on.

james glossaryJohn Deere 7405: A farm tractor built by John Deere for general use. Some of the pieces on this tractor were built in Waterloo and some in Mexico. This is our new tractor we just got this spring.

Jolene: She is my second oldest sister. She is in her first year at college (University of Northern Iowa) and leads a very active life. She is pursuing a career in music composition. She also was Chickasaw County Fair Queen in 2000.

james glossary Large Rectangular Bales: A 3 by 3 by 7 foot rectangular bale of hay, straw, or cornstalk. We only have hay and straw bales. We use them for feeding the cattle and bedding up the hogs. The loader moves them around.

Litter of Pigs: A group of pigs that were just born.

james glossary Livestock trailer: A covered trailer used to haul livestock around on roads. They are pulled by a semi-truck or a pick-up truck.

Loader: A farm implement. This one fits on the tractor and lifts objects. It's the arms or handles of the loader bucket.

Loader Bucket: The working end of the loader. It works like a big shovel. It can attach different ends to it, including the following:

Bale Spear: A Metal spear used for moving bales of hay or straw.

Loader Cart: A bucket for moving livestock.

Pallet Bucket: A loader bucket with two thick tine teeth. This is used to move heavy objects.

Solid Bucket: A loader bucket used for fine loose materials.

Tine Bucket: A loader bucket use to handle thick manure. Manure: Animal waste or compost. Manure is a valuable source of fertilizer for our crops.

james glossaryMilker: Milker on a cow's teats, on the udder.

Milking Parlor: Place in dairy barn where cows are milked.

james glossaryMom: My mother, Irene! She really helps me out with homework, cooks great food, keeps the house clean, and likes gardening. Mom enjoys singing, being with friends, and works part time at a local grocery store. She is a very organized person, attends many of my school events and has supported all of us with our activities.

New Hampton, Iowa: County Seat. Mom works here. We buy various supplies and house and farm needs from here. Our schools are located here. Population of about 3000.

james glossary Noel: Our house cat. He is half Siamese, half Persian and is VERY lazy! He thinks he's boss of the house, but we still love him a whole lot!

Oats: A small grain for livestock feed.

james glossaryOat Cleaner: The device that removes weed and dirt from the oats.

james glossary Oliver Super 77: A farm tractor built in 1956 in Charles City, Iowa. The tractor has been used for light duty work.

Organic border: A 25 foot border line that is used to separate organic crops and livestock from non organic crops and livestock. This keeps the contaminations from other non organic fields away from the organic fields. This is required in organic certification.
